About Business WordSmiths, Inc.

Sid SmithBusiness WordSmiths was founded by Sid Smith as Paradox Solutions in 1998. Since that time we have provided marketing support, copywriting and Internet Marketing services to a wide range of clients.

As the founder and chief copywriter, I've got a diverse background which enables me to write in an engaging and friendly manner.

I started in the computer field as a programmer. If you're old enough to remember FORTRAN, then you can guess at my age. The fates play a mysterious role in everyone's life. Jungian analysts speak of a "daemon" who prods us from the time we are born to live out our own unique hero's journey.

My life has been no different. I landed my first programming job, not because of my vast experience as a programmer, but because I wrote a killer cover letter. My new boss sheepishly revealed that he hadn't even looked at my resume (thank goodness).

Hints came and went throughout the years. When I reflect on my history in high tech, my favorite times were the most creative. When I wrote "user friendly" code that spoke to the needs of my audience, I smiled. Writing proposals, special reports, and articles were my favorite tasks as a consultant with Hewlett-Packard. And, I was in heaven when I created my own newsletter that spoke to the real needs of our customers, instead of boring them with more tech-speak.

Bored with technology myself, I ventured off to graduate school to earn an MA in Counseling Psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute. A beast stirred within...

Allowed to write with creative fervor, I wrote papers that dealt with the human psyche through story and metaphor. Normal words for normal people has been my motto. Some professors downgraded me because I wasn't writing academically (yawn), but one professor said this to me after reading my final paper for a counseling methods class:

"Forget therapy. You should be a writer."

I laughed.

Ignoring his words of wisdom, I became a personal life coach, which is another way of saying "therapist", but without the psychodynamic approach. Again, it was the marketing I loved -- writing marketing materials for myself and other coaches.

Finally, it all came together at a wealth-building workshop. Asked what I did to make money, I replied, "coaching and organizational development." She asked what I really loved doing. Without hesitation, I said: "Writing."

Thus was my writing career born.

I've ghostwritten several books and written countless pages of web copy. But my real love is direct response marketing and copywriting. I love getting inside people's heads, understanding their true motivators, and then gently guiding them to a particular decision. And of all the industries I could pursue, I have been most excited by health and wellness, mostly because I believe in remaining healthy and well myself.

Not to be forgotten, the techie in me is still alive and well. I have delved into the depths of Internet Marketing and the search engines. I know what works and what doesn't, from both a technical and psychological viewpoint.

And this is where we arrive back to Business WordSmiths - the plural.

When I refer to "we" it is not the royal We. Rather, it is:

  • A consortium of search engine and web experts who have years of experience with search engine optimization, web design, and internet marketing
  • A small team of experienced copywriters and ghostwriters who help with both large and small projects

I believe that nobody succeeds alone, which is why I surround myself with successful people from all walks of life.

I invite you into my circle.
